What is a MVNO?

A Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) is a telecommunications provider that offers mobile services without owning its own wireless network infrastructure. Instead, MVNOs lease network capacity in bulk from established Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) such as BT, VODAFONE, 02 or THREE at wholesale rates and then resell these services under their own brand at retail prices.

This unique business model allows MVNOs to focus on customer service, marketing, and creating specialised plans tailored to specific customer needs, such as flexible data packages, international calling, or pay-as-you-go options.

Because MVNOs do not have to invest in building or maintaining network towers and equipment, they can operate with lower overhead costs and often pass these savings on to consumers through more affordable and customisable plans.

MVNOs manage their own billing systems, customer support, and branding, ensuring a distinct customer experience separate from the underlying network provider. Examples of well-known MVNOs include Giffgaff, Virgin Mobile, Smarty and Tesco Mobile.

MVNOs play a vital role in increasing competition and consumer choice in the mobile market, offering cost-effective alternatives and niche services that may not be available from traditional operators
