Surge in WhatsApp Scams Targets UK Victims as Criminals Exploit Encryption
The UK is witnessing a sharp rise in WhatsApp scams, with criminals leveraging the platform’s end-to-end encryption to hide their identities and steal money from unsuspecting users. Recent figures reveal that between 2023 and 2025, victims lost more than £226,000 to one of the most notorious scams, known as the “Hi Mum” or “Hi Dad” message scam, where fraudsters impersonate family members in distress and urgently request money.
Authorities warn that scammers are also infiltrating large WhatsApp group chats-ranging from religious and student groups to workplaces-using stolen verification codes to hijack accounts. Once inside, they pose as trusted contacts and pressure friends or colleagues to send funds, often locking the real account holder out with two-step verification.
Experts highlight that WhatsApp’s encryption, while protecting privacy, also makes it harder for law enforcement to track and stop these criminals. The platform’s popularity and direct messaging features provide scammers with a large pool of potential victims and create a false sense of security.
Police and fraud experts urge users to never share verification codes, always verify unusual requests by calling the person directly, and enable two-step verification for added security. If targeted, users should report the scam and block the sender immediately.
Stay vigilant-WhatsApp scams are evolving rapidly, and awareness is the first line of defence.
